Volunteer: Community Servings Kitchen Volunteers - MansfieldWe would love to have you come in for a volunteer shift at our Distribution Center in Mansfield or our Kitchen Headquarters in Jamaica Plain (Boston). Both locations are set up to accommodate groups of all sizes and provide a meaningful service activity. Ages 13+ are welcome to volunteer! In February of 2024, we expanded our Boston-based medically tailored meals operation to a 23,000-square-foot distribution center at 170 Forbes Boulevard in Mansfield, Massachusetts. This year, we are on track to provide over 1.2 million meals to more than 6,800 clients with HIV/AIDS, cancer, kidney and heart disease, diabetes, and other life-threatening illnesses. At Community Servings, we actively engage the community to provide scratch-made medically tailored meals to individuals and their families experiencing critical or chronic illness and nutrition insecurity. Our new Mansfield facility will help us serve more clients living outside our regional delivery footprint. In Jamaica Plain, volunteers assist our kitchen team in our commercial kitchen where we prepare and package all of our medically tailored client meals from scratch. We start the shift with a brief orientation, get everyone suited up in hairnets, aprons, and gloves, and then head to the kitchen to help out with chopping, peeling, packing, baking, etc. At the Mansfield Distribution Center, volunteers supply operational support by sorting and stacking meals, adding dietary components like fresh fruit, yogurt, milk, and health snacks to packages, and organizing weekly meal deliveries according to diet type, route, delivery method, and date. We start the shift with a brief orientation, get everyone suited up in hairnets then head into the packaging kitchen. We have a very large space which allows us to spread staff and volunteers out in a safe and comfortable way. We currently have daily weekday shifts. To sign up for your first shift as an individual, please see our two online calendars linked below. Select the shift that you would like and click “sign up.” For groups, the number of “available” slots shown for each shift is the maximum size we can book for that shift. Volunteer: Combating Food Insecurity for the Food Allergic
Securing Safe Food (SSF) is on a mission to address the pressing challenges of food insecurity, particularly for individuals with food allergies. Born out of the pandemic, SSF has transformed from a student-led grassroots effort into a national organization partnering with food pantries across the U.S. Our focus goes beyond medical dietary restrictions, recognizing the importance of culturally relevant allergen-friendly choices. By providing diverse, nutritionally balanced alternatives, we're reshaping the landscape of food accessibility and security. Join us in prioritizing safe and healthy food options for all communities.
SSF operates as a fully remote nonprofit. We are seeking virtual volunteers with a passion or evolving interests in food equity and security, food justice, and specialty diets at the intersection of allergies, sustainability, and culturally responsive options. Open volunteer positions involve food pantry coordinating, community and onboarding outreach, partnerships, accounting, grant writing, etc. Expansion to the Greater Boston area is ongoing in response to patient needs at Boston Children’s Hospital allergy clinics. Volunteer: Access to Justice through Lay AdvocacyAccess to Justice through Lay Advocacy
The Center for Law and Education, Inc. (“CLE”) is a non-profit resource and support organization that works with families, advocates, and educators to improve the quality of education for all students, and in particular low-income students. Rooted in both civil rights and school reform, CLE focuses on bringing the two together to address systemic barriers that impede low-income students – who are disproportionately students of color, English learners, and students with disabilities – from learning to high standards and remaining in school to learn. CLE has received a multiyear grant from the Cummings Foundation to reduce school disciplinary suspensions for non-violent, non-drug, school code offenses by providing support to Boston Public School (“BPS”) students through CLE’s Lay Advocacy project. CLE is recruiting 20 volunteers – university students, retirees, and AmeriCorps fellows – to assist students subject to ‘short-term’ exclusions from school (10 school days or less) at their disciplinary hearings. High rates of disciplinary exclusion and missed school days are associated with poor academic achievement, higher drop-out rates, lower graduation rates, and decreased college and career readiness. Many of these students struggle academically and cannot afford to miss any days of school. Very few are represented by legal counsel, and most do not have an advocate. We hope to reduce the number of non-violent, non-drug, non-criminal related suspensions by assigning lay advocates who, with training and support from CLE attorneys, will assist students at short-term disciplinary hearings and help them stay in school to learn. Contact CLE to join our first team of lay advocates. Over a four-week period, CLE will provide you a structured 10-hour curriculum and training program that will prepare you as a lay advocate to assist students in short-term disciplinary hearings. CLE will then assign you a ‘case’ as they arise and based on your availability. CLE attorneys will provide you with on-going support and assistance. Contact InformationIf you are interested in participating in CLE’s Access to Justice through Lay Advocacy project, please contact Sky Kochenour by phone (617-451-0855) or e-mail (skochenour@cleweb.org). Agency: Center for Law and Education Access to Justice through Lay Advocacy
Volunteer: College Bound MentorAs a mentor in College Bound, BC students have the opportunity to work with high school and middle school students (grades 7-12) from Boston Public Schools. These students are brought to campus every other Saturday and take STEM classes in the morning, and College and Career Readiness and Social Justice classes in the afternoon. BC mentors pick the students up from their STEM classes, take them to lunch in Mac, and then go with them to their College and Career and Social Justice classes. In those classes they act as TA's to the Lynch School of Education graduate students who teach the students. There is also mentor/mentee time in between the two afternoon classes during which you will work with the grade whose College and Career class to act as a TA in. During that time you will do activities with your mentees to get to know them, and we will also bring in different student groups to perform for the students. Last year, for example, we had Sexual Chocolate, FISTS, and Common Tones perform for the students during mentor/mentee time. BC mentors will also be assigned a small group of mentees of about 5 or 6 students who they will stay in closer contact with between session and who they will eat lunch with and develop a close relationship with.
